Sherlock Holmes Final Exam Essay

Essay: Create a two-page (or more, double spaced) essay that nominates Sherlock Holmes for Time magazine’s "Person of the Year." (50 points.

Time’s definition of "Person of Year" is the person who most affected the events of the year, for better or for worse.

A successful essay will include a topic sentence that states what you will be writing about (not in first person.) All other paragraphs will use evidence (supporting details) why he should be selected. Your essay will leave no doubt that he should be "The Time Person of the Year." You are trying to convince the editorial board of Time magazine that they should choose him. (Use the word once in the beginning and in your final paragraph.)

Qualifications for man of the year:

"Time Magazine’s official qualifications for "Person of the Year" are:

  • The "Person of the Year" is awarded to a person who most affected the events of the year.

  • The accomplishments do not necessarily have to be great ones. They might be a collection of small ones.

  • The facts must be documented and provable (someone must have witnessed them e.g. Watson.)

  • The nominee should have gone beyond the normal expectations of a person in their position and might have benefited or hurt others. (For example, A doctor who discovers a vaccine.

  • You should include career highlights.

    • Personal qualities (what makes him a good choice)
    • Discussion on how he has benefited others.
    • Don’t exaggerate or sound ridiculous.
    • Include quotes from other people who knew the nominee.
    • Start with the most important details first.

Length: You have (or should have) read at least 14 of the stories/books. That means you have plenty of information to use for your nomination. Your essay should be at least 3 pages long (double-spaced.) If you read the stories and paid attention in class you will be successful on this essay.
