Sherlock Quotations Lesson:

Unit/Theme: Sherlock Holmes      Level: Honors

Subject: Seventh Grade English

NYS Standards/ Benchmarks: E2a The student produces a report that includes appropriate facts and details.

OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES

  • Students will recognize that the stories they read contain many quotations well known to Holmes fans.
  • Students will begin the creation of a Sherlock quotation board.
  • Students will be provided with silent reading time.

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

  • Students will have become familiar with several stories before starting this lesson.
  • Students understand the rules for using quotations.

    ACTIVITIES/ OUTCOMES

  • Mini-lesson- Students will identify any quotations from books they have read.
  • The teacher will recite one of the quotations from Sherlock demonstrating to the class what they should be doing.
  • Group assignment: In small groups (3 or 4) students discuss quotes they like from Holmes and write them down in a notebook section.
  • Students will share quotes orally and add them to several pieces of oak-tag.
  • NOTE: This lesson should be ongoing as each story is completed. Time should be set aside at the end of each period for students to update it.

    ASSESSMENT

  • Group work and sharing.
  • Homework- Find a quotation you particularly like from any book, write it in your journal and be prepared to share.
