  • Students will be provided with silent reading time to review Chapter 3 or read ahead.
  • Students will understand an author’s use of "comic relief."
  • Students will discuss and analyze Watson’s profile of Holmes.
  • Students will be assessed on Chapter 3 of "A Study in Scarlet."

  • Students will have read "A Study in Scarlet Chap. 3 for homework.

    ACTIVITIES/ OUTCOMES

  • (NOTE: There are many events in this chapter that students need to understand thoroughly. A class discussion/question and answer session is very important and will assist moving on.)
  • Silent reading: 10-15 minutes
  • Minilesson: What is the purpose for having Lestrade and Gregson in the story. They don’t solve any cases. What is Sherlock’s opinion (pg. 21)? Identify other books you have read with characters as comic relief.
  • Holmes’ approach to the investigation is very different than Gregson and Lestrade. Compare and contrast them.
  • Holmes says on pg.21 "There is nothing new under the sun. It has all been done before." What does he mean by this? Is this true? Please write your opinion, share it with your group and be prepared to share aloud.
  • Discussion: Watson provides a tremendous profile of Holmes that will assist throughout the stories. What are Holmes strengths and weaknesses? How do you think he appears to other detectives? How did he become this way? What personality traits are helpful? Which are not?

  • Read Chapter 4. In your notes create a list of important events in Chapter 4.
