OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES

  • Students will be provided time for silent reading.
  • The class will briefly review Chap. 5
  • Students will understand and be able to identify the use of sarcasm.
  • The class will discuss several issues presented in the chapter in small groups and as a whole class.
  • Students will be assessed on reading comprehension.

    PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
  • Students will have read "A Study in Scarlet" Chap. 6 for homework.

    ACTIVITIES/ OUTCOMES

  • Silent reading (15 minutes.)
  • Brief review of "A Study in Scarlet" Chapter 5.
  • Small groups: After being provided a definition and examples of "sarcasm" students will identify examples in the chapter. Groups will share.
  • Whole class will discuss Holmes’ use of children to deliver information. Why does he rely on children? Smart? Unfair?
  • Whole class discussion: Holmes listens to Gregson attentively. What does this reveal about Holmes’ character?
  • Small groups: Gregson is very pleased with how he developed his theory of the crime. Reread his discussion with Holmes about it. Does it make sense? Is it logical? Make sure your group can defend its answer.
  • Quiz: "A Study in Scarlet" Chapter 5.

    ASSESSMENT

  • Students will be assessed on "A Study in Scarlet" Chapter 5.
  • Homework: Read Chapter 7 of "A Study in Scarlet."
