NYS Standards/ Benchmarks: E1b: The students read and comprehend at least four books by a single writer and produce evidence of reading that draws the texts together to compare and contrast themes, characters, and ideas. The students evaluate writing strategies and elements of the author’s craft.

OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES

  • Students will begin reading Part II of "A Study in Scarlet"
  • Students will understand that Part II recounts all events that occurred prior to Part 1 of "A Study in Scarlet."
  • Students will be asked as they read Part II to consider if Doyle’s organization is effective for this story.
  • Students will understand Doyle’s use of the Mormon community in this story and their geographical. They will also understand that Doyle used some historical figures in the story.
  • Students will discuss their reading and make predictions about Chapter II.

    PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
  • Students will have read Part 1 of "A Study in Scarlet."

    ACTIVITIES/ OUTCOMES

  • Students will be provided with time for silent reading.
  • The class will understand who the Mormons are and Doyle’s use of them in this story in a historical context. In addition, students will begin to list the different rules of the Mormon community presented in this story. Students will also understand the meaning of the chapter’s title.
  • Students in small groups will discuss John Ferrier’s decision to go with his rescuers, what he agreed to, and whether or not they would make the same decision. Was it fair of the rescuers to demand Ferrier and Lucy join their faith to be rescued? Groups will share their opinions in a full class discussion.
  • Students will make begin making connections between Part 1 and Part 2 of "A Study in Scarlet."
  • Time will be provided to update the Sherlock Holmes’ quoteboard.

    ASSESSMENT

  • "A Study in Scarlet" Part I Chapter 7 Quiz
  • Homework: Read Chapter 2: "The Science of Deduction." Pgs. 14-18.
  • As students read each chapter they will be encouraged to take some notes and underline important information directly in their books for future discussions and reference.
