NYS Standards/ Benchmarks: E1b: Students will read and comprehend at least four books by a single writer and produce evidence that draws the texts together to compare and contrast themes, characters, and ideas. The students evaluate writing strategies and elements of the author’s craft.

E5a: Analyze the reasons for a character’s actions, taking into account the situation and basic motivation of the character.

OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES

  • Students will be able to identify certain historical characters appearing in this chapter.
  • Students will understand what a society’s norms are and consequences of violating them.
  • Students will continue to analyze rising action and will review "conflict" and the different types of conflict.
  • Students will predict a characters’ actions and analyze what each character wants.

    PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
  • Students will have read Chapter 3 of "A Study in Scarlet" Part 2 "John Ferrier Talks with the Prophet."

    ACTIVITIES/ OUTCOMES

  • Silent reading (20 minutes.)
  • Using the school library/Internet small groups of students will create a short report that informs others about a historical character (Brigham Young.) Students will also understand what "polygamy" is and how it is/was acceptable in some societies and why it is outlawed in the United States.
  • Discussion/Journal: What are some norms in your culture/ family? For example, some families have some traditions/ ceremonies that they follow and others do not.

    • norm- a principle of right action binding upon the members of a group and serving to guide, control, or regulate proper and acceptable behavior. n.

  • Group work- The rising action is easy to identify in this story and in this chapter the tension can be felt by the reader. Ferrier has made his decision. However, with every decision there are consequences. In your groups, list the pros and cons of his decision.
