• Students will analyze character decisions and results of those decisions.

  PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

• Students will have read Chapter 4 of "A Study in Scarlet" Part 2 "A Flight For Life."
  
  ACTIVITIES/ OUTCOMES
  
  
• Silent reading (20 minutes) Students will either read ahead or review the current chapter.
  
• Discussions:
  
  • 1) Students will discussion the confrontation between Ferrier, Stangerson and Drebber. Should Ferrier resist or should he hand Lucy to either man? Ferrier’s doesn’t have much of a plan yet he seems to remain calm. What characteristics does he possess that allows him to do that?
    
  • 2) The Holy Four are a secret group that is used to terrorize those who don’t conform. Doyle probably used this idea based of his knowledge of real similar groups.
    
• Students will analyze Doyle’s use of tension and rising action in this chapter. Is it effective? In small groups they will create a storyline in their notebook that shows the introduction, rising action, climax and conclusion of this chapter.
  
• Students will create their own short creative writing piece that uses tension/rising action as an effective writing technique. They will share their pieces aloud.
