OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES

  • Students will be provided with silent reading time.
  • Students will participate in a full class discussion of the main events of Chapter 6.
  • Students will discuss Jefferson Hope’s explanation of his crimes. They will participate in a brief debate of his actions.
  • Students will understand what sociology is and how it relates to character behavior in the story.
  • Students will work in cooperative groups to construct a valid argument.
  • In small groups students will construct arguments for Hope’s prosecutors and defense lawyers should his case have gone to trial Hope’s lawyer might use in a courtroom as a defense for his client’s actions.

    PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
  • Students have read "A Study in Scarlet" Part 2 Chapter 5.

    ACTIVITIES/ OUTCOMES

  • Silent reading: 10-20 minutes.
  • Mini-lesson-Jefferson Hope explained that he finally had his opportunity for revenge against the men responsible for Lucy and Ferrier’s deaths. Most accused murderers do not reveal the truth. Why does Hope tell all?
  • In small groups students will discuss Hope’s reasoning and explanation of how and why he killed Drebber and Stangerson. How did he Hope explain his strategy for revenge in this chapter? Does he feel he had the right to commit murder? He said he had no other choice.
  • In small groups students will construct a defense that a lawyer for Jefferson Hope might use in a courtroom should it go to trial. Another group will construct the prosecution’s case. Each will also create a list of potential witnesses (living) who they might use and a list of questions they would ask each witness for both the prosecution and defense. They will present their ideas in a short debate.
