“The Sign of Four” Chapter 11 “The Great Agra Treasure” Lesson:

NYS Standards/ Benchmarks: E3b: The student participates in group meetings, in which the student gives reasons in support of opinions expressed. E5a The student examines the reasons for a character’s actions , taking into account the situation and basic motivation of the character.

OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES:

  • Students will identify the elements of a story’s resolution.
  • Students will be assessed on their reading comprehension.
  • Students will be able to identify important events in the chapter.

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

  • Students will have read Chapter 11 prior to the lesson.

    ACTIVITIES

  • Silent reading (20 minutes.)
  • Update Sherlock Holmes quoteboard.
  • Students will focus on the next two chapters as the points in the story where Doyle explains all the reader’s questions (loose ends) and indicate the future of the characters.
  • Students will briefly identify and discuss important events in this chapter (it’s short.) NOTE: The major purpose of this chapter is to solidify the relationship between Morstan and Watson and reveal that the box allegedly containing the treasure is empty.
