“The Sign of Four” Chapter 3 “In Quest of a Solution” Lesson:

Unit/Theme: Sherlock Holmes      Level: Honors

Subject: Seventh Grade English

NYS Standards/ Benchmarks: E1b: Students make and support warranted and responsible assertions about the texts. E3b: Students participate in group meetings in which students give reasons in support of opinions expressed. E5a examines the reasons for a character’s actions, taking into account the situation and basic motivation of the character.

OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES:

  • Students will be provided time for silent reading.
  • Students will identify the conflict in the story as it is clearly presented in this chapter.
  • Students will be able to identify the important events that have occurred in the story so far.
  • Students will identify Doyle’s use of foreshadowing in this chapter.

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

  • Students have completed the first two chapters of "Sign of Four" and "A Study in Scarlet."

    ACTIVITIES

  • Silent reading (20-25 minutes.)
  • Update Sherlock Holmes quoteboard.
  • Students will first summarize the conflict of the case, which is presented by Holmes. They will also focus on the description of Mrs. Morstan as she will develop a relationship with one of the characters later.
  • In small groups, students will identify what they believe are important events or details in this story (including foreshadowing.)
