Volunteers contributions and responds when directly solicited by the teacher or discussion leader.

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

  • Students will have read "Sign of Four" Chapter 4.

    ACTIVITIES

  • Silent reading (20-25 minutes.)
  • Update Sherlock Holmes quoteboard.
  • Describe Thaddeus Sholto.
  • In small groups, students will list the important events of this chapter and make predictions about the future of the story.
  • Summarize Sholto’s narrative. He provides important details that connect with Morstan’s description. Students will also analyze Thaddeus Sholto’s actions. What reasons does he provide for the actions that have occurred? Why is he showing remorse now? Sholto also reveals his connection with the pearls. Does it make sense?
  • Discussion: Events move stories forward.How does the meeting with Sholto propel the story along? Explain.
