Sherlock Holmes Stasis and Intrusion Lesson:

Unit/Theme: Sherlock Holmes      Level: Honors

Subject: Seventh Grade English

NYS Standards/ Benchmarks: E5a: The student identifies recurring themes across works. E5a: examines the reasons for a character’s actions, taking into account the situation and basic motivation of the character.

OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES

  • Students will be provided silent reading time.
  • Students will be able to define and identify "stasis" and "intrusion" in a Sherlock Holmes story.
  • Students will improve cooperative learning skills in group work.
  • Students will contribute to the "Sherlock quoteboard."

    You are walking along the street on a sunny day. Everything is going well (stasis.) Suddenly a huge bird swoops down, picks you up and carries you off to a deserted island in the middle of an ocean (intrusion.) For years you fight to survive on the island and eventually build a boat and make your way back to civilization (stasis recreated until the next intrusion. (fight to return stasis)

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

  • Students have read "A Scandal in Bohemia."

    ACTIVITIES/ OUTCOMES

  • Entire class will silently read a book of their choice and update their reading logs (20 minutes.)
  • Students will be provided a scenario where stasis is interrupted by intrusion and the character fights to return stasis.
  • Using "The Red-Headed League" students will identify the intrusion in the story and the events that happen to return stasis at the end of the story.
  • On chart paper students will transfer their events and demonstrate their knowledge of the topic.
  • Students will present their work to their classmates.
  • Update Sherlock quoteboard.
